AUSTRALIA v SOUTH AFRICA 1997-98
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1999

At Brisbane, January 11 (day/night). South Africa won by five wickets. Toss: Australia.

South Africa gave Australia a third successive one-day thumping, while a hip injury to captain Steve Waugh caused them further anguish. Waugh failed again with the bat – he had scored only 12 in five innings – and Bevan's 45 was the best offering on a flat pitch against a string of inform bowlers. Australia's total looked 30 shy, and Kirsten confirmed that as he earned his second match award in three days, giving South Africa a pacy start and crunching two mighty fours in Warne's first over. Cronje, who exchanged words with Steve Waugh after receiving a short ball from him before he was ready, steered his side into the finals with a run-a-ball fifty.

Man of the Match: G. Kirsten. Attendance: 20,671.
