AUSTRALIA v SOUTH AFRICA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1999

At Sydney, December 4 (day/night). South Africa won by 67 runs. Toss: South Africa. International debut: I. J. Harvey.

South African captain Cronje threatened to take his side off the field after Symcox was pelted with golf balls, fruit and a stuffed barbecued chicken from the boundary. The crowd were much harsher on him than Australia's timid batsmen were, as they laboured against his well-flighted off-spin and his vibrant and intimidating repertoire of grunts, groans, stares and stomps. No batsman from either side topped 45 on a slow, turning deck as Australia, bowled out in 38 overs, batted poorly, as they were to do often again. Cullinan danced into the arms of his team-mates after removing his nemesis, Warne, with his district-standard off-breaks. Earlier, Australian seamer Ian Harvey bowled Rhodes with his second ball in international cricket.

Man of the Match: P. L. Symcox. Attendance: 36,562.
