SOUTH AFRICA v SRI LANKA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1999

At Lahore, November 6 (day/night). South Africa won by 66 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka.

With both teams already qualified for the final, South Africa claimed the psychological edge with a convincing victory over Sri Lanka, who had rested Vaas, Muralitharan and Jayasuriya. Quickfire fifties from Kirsten – his third in three games – Klusener, off 41 balls with nine fours and a six, and Cronje, off 45 balls with three sixes, helped the South Africans to blaze the highest total of the tournament. Klusener returned to slice through the top order, earning career-best figures of six for 49. Despite the handicap of bowling second, South Africa reduced Sri Lanka to an embarrassing 72 for six; half-centuries from Lanka de Silva and Dharmasena restored some respectability.

Man of the Match: L. Klusener.
