Second successive victory for South Zone Partab Ramchand - 28 December 1999
South Zone scored their second successive victory in the CK Nayudu Trophy inter-zonal (under-19) cricket tournament at the AC Tech grounds in in Chennai on Tuesday beating West Zone by four wickets. Put in to bat, West were restricted to 206 for nine in 43 overs. Actually they made a good start with openers Parab (18) and PP Joshi putting on 32 runs and then Joshi and Nk Patel (35 off 50 balls with three fours) increasing the score by 72 runs during a second wicket association that lasted 15.2 overs. Joshi who was run out for 76, faced 104 balls and hit five fours. PP Vora, with a gallant unbeaten 41 bolstered the middle order but there was precious little contribution from the others. South's consistent batting saw them home with three balls to spare. Openers BA Pai (22) and Amit Kumar (42) put on 51 runs in 12.3 overs. This was followed by a second wicket partnership of 49 runs off 11 overs between Amit Kumar and R Satish. Skipper YV Rao and NA Yadav then brought South closer to victory with a fourth wicket stand of 45 runs off 6.4 overs. And finally Yadav and DS Doss (28) took South to the doorstep with a brisk fifth wicket partnership of 45 runs off six overs. Yadav's 46 was compiled off just 38 balls with two fours and two sixes while Doss hit 28 off only 26 balls with five hits to the fence. Rain interupted play twice during the West Zone innings reducing the number of overs.
