Mumbai in commanding position
8 December 1999
Mumbai were in command at stumps on the second day of their West Zone
Vijay Merchant Trophy (under-16) match against Gujarat at Ahmedabad on
Tuesday. After gaining a first innings lead of 121 runs, they were 61
for one at close of play.
Resuming at 216 for eight, the Mumbai innings folded up in 9.8 overs
for the addition of 14 runs. JK Patel was the most successful bowler
with four for 60 from 33.4 overs. In reply, the Gujarat batsmen
struggled for runs and were dismissed for 109 runs. That they took 63
overs to compile this score tells its own tale. Only opener Parthiv
Patel who hit 41 off 158 balls with four hits to the ropes showed some
semblance of a fight. The only other batsmen to cross double digits
was VS Dave (14). Pandey was the wrecker-in-chief taking four wickets
for ten runs from ten overs. In the second innings, SS Thakur helped
Mumbai consolidate their position with a bright 36 off 46 balls with
eight fours.
