Twenty three wickets fell on the opening day of the Coca Cola Bottlers trophy cricket tournament match between Vidyartha College and St. Thomas College, Matale which began at police grounds, Kandy yesterday. The match will be continued today at 9.45 am.
The Thomians batting first were dismissed for 124 shortly after lunch with off-spinner Sanjay Nanayakkara doing the damage taking 6 for 42 with support from left-arm spinner Sarath Ranaweera 3 for 25.
But Vidyartha could not capitalise on the efforts of their bowlers as they were dismissed for 139, gaining a slender first innings lead of 14 runs - M. Thillakaratne bowling his off cutters effectively bowled well to capture 5 for 40 and was ably supported by medium pacer I. Abeyratne 4 for 37).
Going in a second time the same day, the Matale Thomians had scored 46 for 3 at close. A decision looks likely in this game.
