Superb batting by Paula Flannery and Lisa Astle took Lancaster Park-Woolston to a victory over East-Shirley and the lead in the WestpacTrust women's one-day cricket competition.

At Ensors Park, Flannery and Astle shared an unbeaten partnership of 163 after Kate Pulford had an early breakthrough, getting Debbie Hockley cheaply.

The pair were in commanding form, punishing the loose deliveries in scoring about 7.5 runs an over.

With superb running between wickets and deft placing of the ball into the gaps, Flannery finished on 90, and Astle 59, as the team reached 174 for one.

Earlier, most of the East-Shirley team had got to double figures with Anna Wilkins scoring 20, Pulford 19, and Helen Bastion 15. However, no- one went on to make a sizeable contribution.

The best of the Lancaster Park-Woolston bowlers were Hockley (three for 17 off 10 overs) and Vanessa Hensley (two for 30).

After being put into bat by Marist at Hagley Oval, St Albans Blue produced a solid team effort to reach 182 for nine.

Susie Burrows (42) and Anna Morris (33) batted attractively with good support coming from Nicola Payne (24) and Aminia Marsh (28).

For Marist, Jane Maley knocked the top off the St Albans batting, getting three for 23, while Catherine Campbell was very economical, conceding just 16 off her 10 overs.

A fine partnership for the second wicket between Campbell and Erin Kelly gave Marist a solid platform.

The team kept in touch with its target with Kelly holding the batting together in compiling a sound 66. However, as off-spinner Payne made inroads into the Marist middle order, the team slumped from 162 for six to be all out for 168 -- a loss by 14 runs. Vanessa Lord was left 15 not out.

South Canterbury beat St Albans Gold by 48 runs in a rain-delayed match in Timaru.
