Scores: Jamaica Broilers 134 for six off 38 overs at the scheduled cut off point at 1:30 p.m; Jamalco 69 all out off 31.3 overs.
Sent in to bat on a slow pitch, Broilers struggled from the outset and appeared in a spot at 65 for six when captain Aaron Daley went for one, caught and bowled Collis Johnson. But resistance came from an unexpected quarter.
Thereafter, 16-year-old Peter Caballero (39 not out) and the veteran Horace Fairweather (37 not out) shared in an unbroken seventh wicket partnership of 69 off the last 15 overs, while Junior Meikle made 15 to ensure a competitive total.
Earlier, Broilers lost opening batsman Valentine Foster and Jamaica youth player Keith Hibbert for 11 and one respectively. Owen Dixon was then caught at the wicket by George Nelson for eight off pacer Devon Gordon, while Fitzroy Beaumont was run out for nine and Meikle bowled by Johnson at 61 for five.
Johnson finished with two for 15 off his eight allotted overs, Devon Gordon two for 27 off seven and pacer Dennis Facey one for 30.
Needing under four runs an over to secure victory, Jamalco started disastrously against the spin of Ephriam McLeod. Hopeton Shand was trapped leg before without scoring in the first over. And fellow opener Hughan Buddan was brilliantly run out for three from a direct throw by young Caballero in the covers to make it six for two in the fifth over.
The very next ball saw Kingsley Duncan going caught in the slips off McLeod for three, while Donald Moulton went leg before Daley for nought to leave Jamalco in big trouble at nine for four and later 13 for five.
They never recovered, despite token resistance from skipper Owen Allison and Devon Gordon (18 each), and Collis Johnson (17). Mcleod claimed three for nine off his eight overs (two maidens), Meikle three for 19 in his eight and Aaron Daley two for 17 off 7.3 overs.
Daley, the former Jamaica allrounder, was elated with this victory. His only regret was not making a clean sweep of the three titles, the team having won the WIPP K.O. Trophy a fortnight earlier.
``When we made 134 I though it was a good score as this could be translated into 200 due to a very slow outfield. In the end our bowlers made the early breakthrough and it was always an uphill struggle for Jamalco, `` said the winning captain.
