Opening Remarks

The Barbados Nation

Sunday, May 24, 1998

More than 1 300 cricketers left the pre-season controversy behind them and donned their whites yesterday to herald the start of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) season, generally regarded as the showpiece of the local sporting calender.

The last minute announcement of sponsorship for both the First and Second Division competitions lifted spirits somewhat and at least ten batsmen responded with centuries.

Pride of place must go to Brian Johnson and Courtney Browne who illuminated the BET ground as their team recorded the day’s highest score in the Courts/Suzuki Division 1 competition.

Johnson made 116 and Browne exactly 100 as BET piled up 283 for four against Pickwick.

There were six centuries in the Intermediate Division and two in the Bubba’s/Lynch’s Insurance Division 2.
