Sherwin Campbell Looking On Bright Side

by Sherrylyn Clarke

SHERWIN CAMPBELL is out, but certainly not down.

The Barbadian opener recently lost his place in the West Indies team during the Cable and Wireless series against England, but he hopes for a better break.

``It has been disappointing. I just came back from Pakistan where I had a fair tour and I came back home expecting a good tour against England but I did not get a big score in any of the matches,'' he said.

Campbell attributed this to defensive batting, where he got good starts, but was not able to carry on to make big scores. It was not a question of confidence, but other factors which made batting difficult.

``My confidence was not really down. In Trinidad the pitch was not the best. I tried to bat long in that game instead of batting really positive. Then I went to Guyana where there was a better pitch.''

Campbell said that he was coming into his own in the second innings but got a bad decision.

But he is trying to learn from his past mistakes and move on from there. ``I'm always exercising and doing a bit of running at the beach, but right now I am trying to reflect on my performance to see the best way to come back and play at my best again.''

He is also looking towards the future, and at 27 it still looks bright.

``There is a long way between now and the South Africa tour. I will get myself ready. If I am selected to go on that tour, I want to make sure that I am mentally and physically ready,'' Campbell said.
