England News Round-up

Lancashire's tough break

Lancashire failed to break even in their day-night floodlit AXA League fixture against Surrey at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Chief executive Jim Cumbes had hoped for a crowd of around 10,000 but just 5,222 paid through the turnstiles despite an investment of around £40,000 on four banks of lights, fireworks and other attractions.

Cumbes remained upbeat and said: ``Our commitment to this sort of cricket is long-term.''

Lancashire won by four wickets with three balls to spare to go top of the league. Two stoppages for rain required Duckworth-Lewis calculations and a revised target of 132 in 22 overs which was attained through a stand of 50 between Ian Austin and Gary Yates. Surrey had posted 182 for six.

Squad News

Andy Tennant has been drafted into the Scotland 12-man squad for Wednesday's NatWest Trophy, first round tie against Worcestershire at Raeburn Place, Edinburgh.

SCOTLAND (v Worcs, Edinburgh, July 24): G Salmond (Grange, capt), M Allingham, Asim Butt (both Heriot's), A Davies (W Lothian, wkt), D Lockhart (Oxford Univ), B Lockie (Carlton), B Patterson (Ayr), I Stanger, G Williamson (both Clydesdale), A Tennant (Prestwick), K Thomson (Aberdeenshire), C Wright (W of Scotland).
