AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998
Toss: Pakistan. With Australia already out of the finals, this was a meaningless match. But it came to life when lively pace bowler Anthony Stuart became only the second Australian to take a hat-trick at this level, following Bruce Reid, against New Zealand in 1985–86. Stuart was playing his third international, aged 27. As a teenager, he was a wicket-keeper, but found his niche in bowling history when Moin Khan edged a perfectly pitched leg-cutter to slip, and he finished with five for 26. Even then, his team struggled. Opener Inzamam-ul-Haq rallied Pakistan from 29 for five to reach 181, and Australia looked no certainties at 110 for four. But Bevan's cool 79 saw them home. Man of the Match: A. M. Stuart. Attendance: 48,218. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
