NEW ZEALAND v PAKISTAN Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998
At Sharjah, November 13. Pakistan won by four wickets. Toss: Pakistan. As in their previous encounter, Parore and Saeed Anwar dominated the batting, though they were upstaged by Waqar Younis, who took six for 44. Only Parore stood firm as Waqar reduced his side to 60 for six, until Germon joined him in a stand of 115, equalling the seventh-wicket record in one-day internationals. New Zealand's hopes of defending a target of 193 suffered when Doull strained a hamstring in his first over. Anwar set off as if hoping to repeat his feat of three consecutive hundreds at Sharjah in 1993–94, only to fall for 54, from 37 balls with six fours and two sixes. Moin Khan completed the victory, which left New Zealand and Sri Lanka tied on points; New Zealand were declared finalists after protracted consultation among officials. Man of the Match: Waqar Younis. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
