INDIA v PAKISTAN Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998
Toss: Pakistan. With the pitch playing far better, a stand of 161 between Azharuddin, who passed 6,000 runs in his 222nd one-day international, and Dravid set up a stiff target. Saeed Anwar's early brilliance kept Pakistan on the ball: he hit 80 from 78 balls, with three sixes and six fours. But the match turned back India's way when he holed out off Tendulkar. Salim Malik revived the chase, but Pakistan were 221 for eight, needing 44 at a run a ball, when Saqlain Mushtaq joined him. He provided durable company and, ignoring a twisted ankle, Malik cut the penultimate ball of the match from Joshi through the gap at point for a boundary. Man of the Match: Salim Malik. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
