SRI LANKA v INDIA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998

At R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, August 28 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by nine wickets. Toss: India.

Tendulkar launched himself into captaincy with a century. But his 110, off 138 balls, was made to look pedestrian by Jayasuriya, who scored an unbeaten 120 off just 128. He saw Sri Lanka home with nine wickets and 5.4 overs to spare, but had to be carried from the field because of cramp. Already tired after bowling ten overs, he had skipped tea, believing his innings would be brief. After Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharana had raised Sri Lanka's first-wicket record to 129, De Silva scored a composed 49 not out – an hors d'oeuvre to what was to become a feast.

Man of the Match: S. T. Jayasuriya.
