SOUTH AFRICA v AUSTRALIA Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998
At Bloemfontein, April 13. South Africa won by 109 runs. Toss: Australia. As in the Tests, Australia relaxed after winning the series, while South Africa, desperate to restore lost reputations, pulled off a conclusive win. They reversed a decision to rest Donald, while Australia gave several regulars a day off, allowing Steve Waugh to captain the team for the first time. South Africa responded with their biggest total against Australia – 310 for six, helped by some loose bowling. Klusener made 92 as an opener and put on 109 with Cronje, who hit six fours and three sixes; then Cullinan scored 57 off 39 balls. Australia lost their top four for 52 and only captain Waugh did himself justice, with a superb 91 off 79 balls. He was last out as South Africa won in just 37 overs. Man of the Match: L. Klusener. Man of the Series: S. M. Pollock. Attendance: 14,084. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
