Thirty teams have been invited to participate in the Kandy Region of the Cricket Board's Division III cricket tournament conducted by the Kandy District Cricket Association on behalf of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka which will get under way next month.

The president of the KDCA and PA Organiser for the Senkadagala Electorate Tillina Tennakoon told this correspondent that since a very large number of teams have entered this tournament, they will be divided into groups where they will play on a league basis. Initially each club will play 3 for 4 matches before moving into the knock-out stage in the regional level.

Tillina Tennakoon said that the rules of the tournament will be strictly adhered to and deterrent action will be taken against the clubs which do not complete their fixtures. Last year's tournament saw some of the clubs not completing their fixtures at the regional level but appeared to have escaped scot free.

He also said that the recent construction of 30 cement wickets in the Kandy region by the Board of Control will go a long way to develop cricket in the district as some of the clubs often have come to play matches with hardly any practice. With these concrete wickets being made available free of charge for clubs and schools by the owners of the grounds in which they are constructed, the clubs will have the opportunity of practising very often and which will uplift the standard and competitive level of cricket.

The chairman of the tournament committee of the KDCA Senaka Niyangoda said that the invited clubs have been summoned for a meeting at the Asgiriya Pavilion on Friday August 28 so that the clubs could be briefed on the rules and conditions governing the tournament.

The clubs which have been invited to participate in the Division III tournament from Kandy area are:

Old Trinitians SC, Old Antonians SC, Old Sylvestrians SC, Old Rajans SC, Kandy Youths CC, Kandy Saracens CC, Gampola Youths CC, Gampola CC, Sutherland SC, NCC SC, Ekamuthu SC (Muruthalawa), Vinco SC (Udatalawinna), Madawala United SC, Cosbees SC, Young Stars SC, Digana SC, Galagedera Youth SC, Orient SC, Remedians SC, University of Peradeniya, Liverpool SC, Galagedera CC, Central Hills CC, Rangers SC, Shakthi SC, Kandy Zeylanikans CC, Malwatte SC.
