The Secretary of the Kandy Regional Cricket Board Mr. Janaka Pathirana said that the schools in the Hanguranketha lack basic amenities which has turned out to be a drawback. Most schools play only softball cricket and some of them were experts at softball cricket and it will be only a case of transformation from softball cricket to hard ball cricket. With this in view the Kandy Regional Cricket Board had constructed two twin concrete wickets at Poramadulla Central College grounds at a cost of Rs. 100.000.
Mr. Janaka Pathirana said that in fact the Minister of Sports Mr. S. B. Dissanayake is very keen that leather ball cricket is introduced in a big way in the Hanguranketha electorate and the Nuwara Eliya district and he has promised all assistance to promote and develop the game in the area. Two schools - Ganga Palatha MV and Diyatillake MMV have already introduced leather ball cricket along with Poramadulla Central.
Mr. Janaka Pathirana said that girls in the Hanguranketha area have shown great interest in playing cricket as nearly 20 girls have made applications to undergo this coaching camp. In fact this was the first time that Kandy Regional Cricket Board will be undertaking the task of coaching cricketers from the fairer sex. This is something which was not there even in a place like Kandy. In addition about 75 cricketers between the ages of 13 and 15 will undergo training in this camp.
Kandy Regional Cricket Board's Coaching Committee is headed by C. P. P. Raj (Chairman), M. Zarook (Co-ordinator). The coaching aspect of it will be handled by Regional Coach Mr. Sunil Fernando and assisted by C. N. Dissanayake, Upali Kodituwakku, Chaminda Kodikara and Lakshaman Panditharatne, Cricket Board's Director of Coaching Mr. Malcolm Perera will also be present .
