Commonwealth Games-bound side upset Sahara Cup team

LAHORE, Aug 30: A breezy century by skipper Salim Elahi (129) helped Commonwealth Games-bound Pakistan 'A' team to stun the Sahara Cup team by five wickets in a practice match at the Qadhafi Stadium on Sunday.

It was the final game of the two-match series organized to provide both the teams match practice before proceeding on foreign tours. The senior team will be touring Canada while the 'A' side will go to Kuala Lumpur.

Chasing a formidable target of 270 in the 50 overs, the Pakistan 'A' team crossed it with five wickets and four deliveries to spare.

Salim Elahi with his fellow-opener Kashif Ahmad (68) gave Pakistan 'A' a flying start of 171 off 197 balls.

Kashif Ahmad cracked nine fours and faced 100 balls. After Ahmad's departure, Salim Elahi continued to maul the seniors bowling attack, despite having little support from follow batsmen Azhar Shafique (9), Wajahatullah (10) and Akhtar Sarfraz (13).

When Salim Elahi was eventually run out while stealing a third run, the Pakistan 'A' victory was just 45-runs away from victory.

Salim Elahi smashed 17 boundaries and faced 126 deliveries.

Taimur Khan (26 with two fours) and Mohammad Husain (11) completed the job in 49.2 overs.

Senior side captain Aamir Sohail took two wickets for 41. Leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmad bagged one wicket for 66.

Earlier, the Sahara Cup side, batting first, collected 269 for seven in 50 overs.

Veteran Test batsman Salim Malik top scored with 89 while Inzamamul Haq scored an unbeaten 62.

Malik, who hit a valuable 62 in the first practice match on Friday, slammed nine fours and a six to produce another high-class innings. He consumed 115 balls.

Inzamamul Haq scored a quickfire 41-ball 62 with the help of three sixes and five fours.

Wicketkeeper/batsman Moin Khan made 34 with the aid of three fours), Shahid Afridi (26 with four fours), Azhar Mahmood (17), Yousaf Youhana (19) were the other main scorers. Aamir Sohail could score only three.

Shahid Nazir, Azhar Shafique, Taimur Khan, Arshad Khan, Mohammad Husain and Wajahatullah all claimed one wicket each.
