LAHORE, Aug 27: Former Pakistan captain and celebrated Test batsman Javed Miandad formally took charge of the National senior cricket camp here on Thursday.

The camp has been set up at the Qadhafi Stadium since Aug 20 to pick the Pakistan senior team for the Sahara Cup five-match series against India.

The world-class player of not-so-distant past, Javed Miandad, arrived here by a direct flight from London on Thursday morning after five-hour delayed flight.

Talking to Dawn, Miandad said that he had not been able to meet the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials.

However, he would be talking to them on Friday and then be able to brief the newsmen about his plans and strategy.

Miandad, one of the best brains of cricket in Pakistan, was appointed by the PCB executive council as the national senior team coach in its meeting on Aug 16.

Miandad delivered a lecture to trainees at the camp during the afternoon session. Except for the former captains Wasim Akram and Rashid Latif and off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq, all the other probables were present. Wasim is leading Lancashire in the current English cricket season while Saqlain is representing Surrey. Rashid has not reported at the camp.

A 50-overs-a-side practice match between Pakistan seniors and Pakistan 'A' will be played at the Qadhafi Stadium tomorrow (Friday).

The Pakistan 'A' side has been preparing for the XVIth Commonwealth Games, also at the Qadhafi Stadium, under the supervision of the former Test opener Mohsin Hasan Khan.

Aamir Sohail, named captain by the PCB council, will lead the Pakistan senior team while the Pakistan 'A' side will led by its new skipper Salim Elahi.
