Hockley's cricket future secured

In what is believed to be a world first for women's cricket, outstanding New Zealand batsman Debbie Hockley has been contracted by Canterbury up to the 2000 World Cup tournament.

Hockley will also be employed part-time by New Zealand Cricket in a promotional role, allowing her to reduce her workload as a physiotherapist at Princess Margaret Hospital and giving her more time to concentrate on her cricket.

New Zealand cricket's Player of the Year for the 1997-98 season, Hockley had expressed some doubts about her availability for first-class and international play. Those doubts have now been extinguished and Hockley will continue a career which began for Canterbury as a 15-year-old in 1977.
