AUSTRALIA v SRI LANKA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1997

Toss: Australia. Sri Lanka earned a place in the finals with their second win over Australia. Steve Waugh had missed the bulk of the World Series through injury but made up for lost time with his first century in his 187 one-day internationals. Meanwhile, Bevan pushed his series aggregate to 298 for once out. But Australia's 242 would prove insufficient. Again, Kaluwitharana was the wild card, or wild horse, bolting out of the gate with 74 off 69 balls and leaving McGrath with the worst figures by any Australian at this level – one for 76. Sri Lanka were able to glide home with minimal risk; Kaluwitharana won his third match award and, a few days later, was named the outstanding player of the preliminary rounds.

Man of the Match: R. S. Kaluwitharana. Attendance: 40,571.
