SRI LANKA v WEST INDIES
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1997

At Hobart, January 3. West Indies won by 70 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka.

Though West Indies arrived in Hobart still looking for their first win, their reputation was not the only one at stake; Sri Lankan off-spinner Muralitharan had been called for throwing in the Melbourne Test eight days earlier. Umpires Prue and Davis admitted paying attention to his action, but neither saw anything so out of the ordinary as to be unfair. Muralitharan managed two wickets, including that of the diminutive Chanderpaul, who blamed his over-sized pads for an attack of cramp but still scored 77. The exuberant Gibson made sure that was enough, taking five for 42 at a lively pace.

Man of the Match: S. Chanderpaul. Attendance: 6,048.
