Sent in on the fastest pitch they were to meet in the Caribbean, New Zealand started nervously and lost wickets regularly to eager bowling from Ambrose, and Harper's brilliant fielding. It took a dashing 111-run stand for the seventh wicket by Parore and Patel, who hit three sixes in 71 from 58 balls, to lift them to 243, their biggest one-day total against West Indies. Though Williams and Chanderpaul started boldly with 126 in 26 overs, New Zealand struck back and, at 197 for eight, many of the crowd were leaving. Ambrose regained the impetus with 17 from ten balls, leaving the last-wicket pair, Harper and Walsh, to get 23 from 14. Harper scored 15 from Nash's final over and two no-balls from Morrison ensured a home win.
