SOUTH AFRICA v ENGLAND
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1997

At Johannesburg, January 13. South Africa won by three wickets. Toss: England.

South Africa regained the lead with a victory which was more straightforward than the margin might suggest. England were always struggling after Pollock's opening burst of three for seven in six overs, including Atherton – at the scene of his heroic Test century less than two months earlier – first ball. It took a dogged 92-ball fifty from Fairbrother, with support from Ramprakash, White and Russell, playing his first one-day international since May 1991, to usher them to respectability. DeFreitas and Gough impressed with the ball as South Africa then stuttered to 73 for four, but responsible innings from Rhodes and McMillan revived them and Pollock secured the win, along with his second match award.

Man of the Match: S. M. Pollock. Attendance: 28,800.
