England suffered their third defeat at Newlands in the space of a week following their three-day loss in the Fifth Test and the day/night reverse at the hands of Western Province. South Africa's win owed much to the all-round brilliance of Pollock, who first produced a run-a-ball 66 to rescue his side from 107 for six in the 31st over and then, in company with the hostile Donald, bowled nervelessly at the death. But England contributed to their own downfall, dropping Pollock on 30 and later panicking badly, losing their last seven wickets for 50. Thorpe kept the visitors' hopes alive but, when his 96-ball innings was ended by a brilliant catch in the 48th over, South Africa could start to celebrate their first ever one-day win over England, at the fifth attempt.
