SOUTH AFRICA v SRI LANKA Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1996
At Port Elizabeth, December 21 (day/night). South Africa won by 44 runs, Sri Lanka's target having been revised to 184 from 34 overs. Toss: South Africa. South Africa squeezed past their opponents into the finals, when rain made a difficult task for Sri Lanka impossible. They were interrupted in the 29th over at 101 for five, 137 short of victory; when play resumed after a two-hour break (in which unruly spectators invaded the field to slide across the tarpaulin covers) a revised target left them less than five overs to score 83. But Sri Lanka were already down to their last recognised batsman, Tillekeratne, after Matthews reduced them to 34 for three. There were fifties for South Africa from Cullinan, who needed stitches in his lip after attempting a reverse sweep, and Rhodes. Man of the Match: C. R. Matthews. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
