SOUTH AFRICA v NEW ZEALAND Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1996
At Verwoerdburg, December 11. South Africa won by 81 runs. Toss: South Africa. South Africa recalled Callaghan and promoted him to open, with sensational effect: he thundered out the fifth-highest score in limited-overs internationals. Despite offering a chance in the first over, he devastated New Zealand's bowling in a sustained assault of 19 fours and four sixes. His unbeaten 169 took 143 balls and carried South Africa past 300 for the first time in one-day cricket. In reply, Parore hit 108 from 95 balls – like Callaghan's, his maiden hundred at this level – but, after he lost Thomson, New Zealand posed no threat and were bowled out with nearly ten overs left. Man of the Match: D. J. Callaghan. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
