INDIA v WEST INDIES
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1996

At Calcutta, November 5 (day/night). India won by 72 runs. Toss: India.

There was a sense of déjà vu when West Indies fielded first in a day/night final against India at a packed Eden Gardens in November for the second year running. The only difference was that Richardson had chosen to bowl, whereas Walsh lost the toss. Once again, though, India outplayed their guests. Jadeja and Tendulkar opened with another century stand, Tendulkar providing the thrust with 66 in 68 balls, while Azharuddin and Kambli extended the torment. Kambli, after a more responsible start, still cut loose at the end to reach 58 off 40.

Any hopes the West Indians had of chasing 275 took a near-fatal blow when Williams cut Srinath to Azharuddin and Lara dragged a widish ball from Prasad into his stumps in successive overs. They were finally choked when Hooper cut high to point. Arthurton batted on for a while and Walsh hit Raju for three towering sixes. But West Indies's only consolation was to reduce the winning margin from 102 runs the previous year to 72.

Man of the Match: S. R. Tendulkar. Man of the Series: S. R. Tendulkar.
