NEW ZEALAND v WEST INDIES
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1996

At Gauhati, November 1. West Indies won by 135 runs. Toss: West Indies.

The West Indian batsmen treated New Zealand's attack with contempt. Lara, returning from suspension, shared a rollicking stand of 111 in 21 overs with Hooper, who then breezed to 111 himself off 114 balls. With Arthurton and Cummins joining the run spree, West Indies passed 300.

Despite perfect batting conditions, the New Zealanders might have lost by an even more crushing margin but for the last-wicket pair, Nash and Pringle; joining forces at 123 for nine, they batted out time and added 48. Leg-spinner Dhanraj, who had not bowled in his only previous international, the washout at Margao, hustled out the late middle order for the attractive figures of four for 26.

Man of the Match: C. L. Hooper.
