A superlative innings from Campbell, his first hundred at this level, helped Zimbabwe to their first international win on home turf. He scored 131 not out from 115 balls, including four sixes and 11 fours. Campbell's furious assault enabled his team to plunder 138 from the last 17 overs.

Sri Lanka were well placed at 233 for two in the 43rd over, but then lost Mahanama for his second consecutive hundred; three more wickets fell within three overs. Some excellent improvisation from De Silva, whose 97 came off 89 balls, kept the target in sight. He thought he needed six off the last ball; in fact, owing to a mistake on the scoreboard, it was seven, and he only managed four anyway. As he returned to the pavilion, a spectator who thought De Silva had earlier obstructed the field attempted to punch him.
