West Indies' victory was their first in limited-overs internationals in England since 1984, and would have been far more crushing but for careless batting towards the end. But the home batsmen's failings counted for more. Only Stewart, who scored 74, and Ramprakash, with 32 from 36 balls, passed 15. Walsh bowled tightly, conceding 28 in ten overs, and his third wicket made him the leading West Indian wicket-taker in one-day internationals.

A target of 200 was too easy. West Indies were well on course when rain ended play – though they could not have been declared winners, as they were one ball short of the 20 overs needed for a result. Next morning, Lara and Campbell took them to 180 for one before Gough dismissed Lara, caught over his shoulder by a running Atherton, and Richardson. Two more wickets quickly followed, but it was too late to make much difference – except by giving England hope for the rest of the series.
