In only his third international, Jeff Wilson, the athletic 19-year-old all-rounder from Otago, helped to pull off a remarkable win. Replying to Australia's 247 for seven on an ideal one-day pitch, not even another fine 91 from Crowe, still limping badly, was enough. When he was run out by a direct hit from Mark Waugh at backward point, New Zealand needed 76 from the last ten overs. Wilson hit 44 from 28 balls, including three fours and a crucial six off Steve Waugh in the 48th over. To the delight of a full house he squirted the same bowler to the fine-leg boundary for victory with two balls to spare.

In Australia's innings, Mark Waugh and Jones had the New Zealand bowlers at their mercy, putting on 143 before Jones was run out by a deft flick out of the back of his hand by Harris. Mark Waugh's 108 was his maiden century in one-day internationals.
