England v Pakistan 1992 Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1993
At Manchester, August 24. England won by six wickets. Toss: Pakistan. England gave retiring manager Mickey Stewart a memorable send-off, with a crushing victory to take the series 4-1. When Hick stroked the winning single, 11.2 overs remained - and that despite Pakistan's seemingly challenging total of 254 for five. The tourists, despite losing Javed Miandad to back problems and Salim Malik to a thigh injury, had made steady progress on another excellent pitch. Opener Aamir Sohail, reprieved early on when Lamb dropped a slip catch off newcomer Cork, rounded off a fine season with 87, while Inzaman-ul-Haq, so disappointing during the Tests, at last showed his true potential. He punctuated an 86-ball stay with a six and half a dozen fours before departing for 75, giving Cork a well-deserved wicket. Gooch and Alec Stewart launched the reply with a spectacular opening stand of 98 in 15 overs, to leave little doubt about the result. Hick twice drove Mushtaq Ahmed for soaring sixes while Smith, with 85 off 91 balls, made sure of his third Man of the Match award of the series. The final, explosive touches had been put to Stewart senior's one-day management record. during his six years in charge, England played 91 internationals, won 52 and lost 35, with one tie and three no-results. However, the Test record had been less impressive: of 58 games, 12 were won, 20 lost and 26 drawn. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
