AUSTRALIA v WEST INDIES
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1993

At Melbourne, December 12 (day/night). Australia won by nine runs. Toss: Australia. Australia celebrated the opening of the Great Southern Stand at the MCG with a hard-earned win, thrillingly completed. Take away Moody's buccaneering 51, in 44 balls, featuring two driven sixes, and the drama at the end as Ambrose slogged a four and a six in the penultimate over, and it was a dull match, fashioned by a slow, uneven pitch. Marsh and Border batted with circumspection, adding 68 to erect the platform for Moody's spectacular assault. When West Indies replied, Haynes waged almost a lone battle to keep them in contention. Waugh had a hand in the capture of five of the first seven wickets. Besides dismissing the dangerous Lara and Hooper in successive overs, he caught Richardson and effected two run-outs with spectacular agility and lightning judgement.

Man of the Match: S. R. Waugh. Attendance: 59,426.
