Who was the first cricketer to appear in 100 Test matches? (06 September 2002)

Few who had seen the young Michael Colin Cowdrey playing on a pitch cut out of a jungle near Bangalore would have predicted that here was a lad who would go on to become the first cricketer to appear in 100 Tests. But Cowdrey did go on to accomplish just that.

After a successful career as a school cricketer at the Tonbridge public school, he went on to become the youngest cricketer to represent Kent. Soon he was also representing England in the international arena. His Test career, which began against Australia in Brisbane in November 1954, reached its acme when Cowdrey made his 100th appearance in the cricket in July 1968.

Captaining the English side, this most popular of cricketers provided the Edgbaston audience with plenty to cheer about by celebrating his unique feat with a century on the third day. Australia - England's opponents in the match - struggled in reply, but once they evaded the follow-on, a draw was going to be the only logical end.
