Stephen Fleming (25) and Nathan Astle steadied the Kiwi innings with a 70-run partnership in 16.1 overs for the second wicket. Fleming was in good touch but lost his wicket playing a rash shot to the spin of Harbhajan Singh, caught by Shewag at first slip. The Indian spin bowlers did well on the slow track to restrict New Zealand to 211/8 in 50 overs. Craig McMillan (17) and Lou Vincent (16) were the only batsmen to get to the double figure mark, rest of the middle and lower order batsmen fell like a house of cards.
