The Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy was the venue for the second Test match between India and Sri Lanka. Having won the first Test at Galle, Sri Lanka were in an upbeat mood. The Indian side had a depleted look to it, losing the services of Javagal Srinath. On a pitch with some grass on it, Sourav Ganguly won the toss and elected to field. Sanath Jayasuria (3), Marvan Atapattu (39), Kumar Sangakkara (31), Russel Arnold (5) and Hashan Tillkaratne (10) were all back in the pavilion by the 44th over leaving Sri Lanka on a precarious 138/5 in the 44th over.
