Launch at Lord's
Highlights of the CostCutter Under-15 World Challenge Watch

The junior world cup saw the cricket stars of the future compete against each other in a global tournament providing valuable experience for the young players as they attempted to reach the final at Lord's. The inaugural World Challenge event in 1996 introduced us to current Test players, Hasan Raza of Pakistan, the youngest ever to play Test cricket, and Mohammad Kaif of India. The Costcutter Under 15 World Cricket Challenge provided an ideal springboard to launch new cricket careers.

England lined up at Lord's on 29th July for the Opening Ceremony alongside 1996 winners India, with Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Holland challenging for the trophy. Two League Groups played at Eton and Wellington Colleges, with the semi-finals being held at Chelmsford (home of Essex CCC) and Hove (Sussex CCC) on the 5th and 8th August. The final was played at Lord's on Thursday 10th August and was televised live on Sky Sports.

The tournament was run by the ECB under the auspices of the ICC. Matches were 50 overs per side and played to ICC regulations.

Review of Lombard World Challenge 1996

  • The Lombard World Challenge was the inaugural under 15 cricket world cup event which was held in England during August 1996.
  • Ken Lake, General Secretary of the English Schools' Cricket Association (ESCA) and David English (cricket entrepreneur and creator of the Bunbury Tales) created the concept for an Under 15 cricket world cup. The event was organised by ESCA.
  • Group A matches were held at the Lensbury Club, London, where India won the group with England as the runners-up. Other countries in the group were West Indies, Zimbabwe and Canada.
  • Group B matches were held at Oundle School, Peterborough, where Pakistan won the group with South Africa as the runners-up. Other countries in the group were Australia, Sri Lanka and Holland.
  • India won a very competitive match against South Africa in the 1st Semi-Final at Trent Bridge. Pakistan beat England in the 2nd Semi-Final at Headingley. Both matches were featured live on Sky Sports.
  • The Final was held on 20th August at Lord's in front of a crowd of 10,000 enthusiastic supporters. India beat Pakistan by 4 wickets. Again, the match was featured live on Sky Sports.
