The Gentlemen of Cheshire
It is reputed that Nelson's manoeuvres in the Atlantic depleted the Gentlemen of Cheshire's side in their first recorded fixture against the Gentlemen of Shropshire in 1805. The game was played to a wager of 50 guineas, a hogshead of beer, and the losers to buy dinner at the Myrtle and Mermaid Pub in Shrewsbury. Regular games were played from the 1820s onwards. The number of fixtures per season remains around 10-15, and the fixtures this year do not substantially differ from those of 50 years ago.
