Sri Lanka's much sought-after fast bowler Chaminda Vaas is due to
arrive in England this week, but not to represent his country, but to
ascertain his physical fitness under the watchful eyes of physio Alex
Kountouri. Sri Lanka manager Ranjit Fernando said that reports from
Colombo have indicated that Vaas was not one hundred percent fit,
despite playing in the second 4-day unofficial Test for Sri Lanka 'A'
against South Africa 'A' at Kurunegala last week. Vaas bowled 20
overs in that match which Sri Lanka lost by an innings, and took one
wicket for 58 runs.
Vaas underwent an operation in his right ankle, in South Africa early
this year and has been fighting hard to regain full fitness. Fernando
said that the team management would monitor Vaas' progress carefully
before taking a final decision whether to include him in the tour
party.
Vaas is unlikely to play in the first two matches of the triangular
against South Africa and England this week, but depending on his
fitness may be considered for the final, if Sri Lanka qualify. He
stands a better chance of playing in the one-off Test against England
at the end of the month, as there are two matches, one against Sussex
and another against Hampshire before that.
