Glamorgan punished by Smith

By David Green at Southampton

Hampshire (249-5) bt Glamorgan (119) by 130 runs

ROBIN Smith's violent 103, supported by a competition best 76 from Giles White, underpinned Hampshire's 249 for five, a massive score in a match reduced to 33 overs and one which, not surprisingly, proved well beyond Glamorgan.

Wayward bowling early on from Darren Thomas and Gary Butcher gave Hampshire impetus after they had been put in, though John Stephenson, carving at a long hop, was brilliantly caught by Michael Powell, airborne on the cover fence.

This brought in captain Smith who did not fail to punish bowling that was frequently short and wide, even when the usually reliable Steve Watkin had joined the attack.

White drove Dean Cosker straight for six and hit six fours off 69 balls. Smith hit two sixes, one an enormous blow off Tony Cottey over the houses at the City End, and 14 fours off only 77 balls.

Big-hitting Nixon McLean, who hit Thomas on to the flats at midwicket, put on 46 with Paul Whitaker in the last four overs.

Glamorgan's target was a distant one and captain Matthew Maynard promoted himself up the order in an attempt to meet it.

When Steve James was caught in the fourth over and Maynard followed four balls later, Glamorgan's task was all the more daunting.

Cottey and Adrian Dale kept up the required rate for a few overs, but after Hartley had bowled Cottey and Dale was caught at midwicket, the collapse was swift and final, Glamorgan losing their last seven wickets in 12 overs.
