Surrey v Warwickshire

Electronic Telegraph

27 April 1998

NEIL SMITH hit 48 runs in 31 balls at the Oval to give Warwickshire a comfortable victory in defence of the AXA League title.

A 10-over contest was played after heavy morning rain but even this needed thought, which Surrey seemed reluctant to apply.

Warwickshire won with five balls to spare, and Smith's tactic of aiming at the gaps with blacksmith's power contrasted with Surrey's boundary-seeking approach. Ashley Giles conceded only six runs off his two overs of left-arm spin.

Surrey could not blame their luck because Ben Hollioake escaped a stumping chance and Graeme Welch's first ball slipped out of his hand, sailing full toss over the wicketkeeper for four no-balls, worth six runs, in an over costing 20.
