PRADEEP HEWAGE scored a sparkling 111 and wicket-keeper batsman

05 April, 1998 Hewage steers Bens to 47-run win


209-run stand for the fourth wicket to guide St. Benedict's College to beat their arch rivals St. Joseph's College by 47 runs in the 4th annual limited over cricket encounter played at Kotahena yesterday.

This win enabled the Bens to carry away the Bishop Bonjean Memorial Trophy and equal the series 2-all. The Benedictines won the match with 3.1 overs to spare.

The Bens made 264 for 9 in their allotted overs.

Paceman Roshan de Silva 2 for 62 and spinner Dhanuka Pathirana 2 for 53 were two successful bowlers for Joes. There were three run outs in the Bens innings.

St. Joseph's chasing an asking rate of 5.3 runs per over started off well with openers putting on 82 runs. Johannes Jayasuriya hit a quick 36 with 7 fours while co-opener Ian Daniels played a lone good knock of 80 in 86 balls. The rest of the Joes batsmen failed against bens spinners Pradeep Dassanayake 3 for 35 and Shahen Perera 2 for 14. Paceman Asiri Gunathilaka supported by claiming 3 for 42.

Man-of-the-Match - Pradeep Hewage, Best Batsman - Rally Tissera, Best Bowler - Shahen Perera, Best Fielder - Malka Fernando (all from St. Benedict's).
