SA-Pakistan first Test to start today

Qamar Ahmed

Saturday, 14 February 1998

The Pakistan team will be named on the morning of the match. But South Africa like Pakistan will take the field with a new captain. Aamir Sohail and Gary Kirsten will be leading their country for the first time in Test Fresh from their tour of Australia, the South African will have the advantage of a home wicket at the wanderers, abouncy one for what which may bother the Pakistan batsmen if Shaun Pollock and a fit Alan Donald bowl to their full potential.

Their batting is a brittle and unpredictable as that of the tourists and a lot will depend on how favourable the wicket is for the batsmen. If the wicket starts to crack which is likely then Pakistan spinners Mushtaq Ahmed and Saqlain Mushtaq could pose a few problems which may not be to the liking of the South African batsmen. Their weakness against spin is well documented.

Rain has already soaked the outfield and more rain is in the air which may even cause more delays in this Test. Pakistan obviously would like to go in the second Test unscathed and that is what hey will have in mind when they take the field.
