SUNLG R20: 17 Sep 1995, REVIEW

Sunday League R20 Review, 17 September 1995

Costly final day for Worcs - Mike Beddow

Worcestershire (145-6) v Glamorgan (3-0). Abandoned

THE Lottery millionaire who rescued his winning ticket from the
washing machine might have had sympathy with Worcestershire yes-
terday as the Sunday League title slipped from their grasp.

For the second week in succession, their match was abandoned
when, in hindsight, one more win would have secured the trophy
and #35,000. Instead, they dropped #26,250 in falling to third
place.

Whether they would have beaten Glamorgan - either by defending
the original score or an amended target of 118 in 30 overs - is
open to conjecture. But at least they would have had a chance.

Worcestershire`s wretched day, which ended a terminal downpour,
might have been scripted by their rivals.

Glamorgan, however, had something to smile about as the season
squelched to a conclusion. Steve James, Colin Metson, Steve
Barwick and Steve Watkin took a share of all the individual
prize-money in the League.

Meanwhile, Colin Wells struck six sixes for Derbyshire in making
66 off 26 balls - a notable innings even in the unreal context of
a 10-over thrash - but just as Lancashire were launching their
attempt to reach a target of 120 the rain returned to halt
proceedings.

In the contest at Chelmsford, also reduced to 10 overs per side,
Essex`s nine-wicket defeat by Yorkshire cost them the #4,375 they
would have picked up for finishing fourth. After Essex had oddly
chosen to bat first, Yorkshire were home with two balls to spare.
