Glamorgan clinched an exciting 29-run win over Middlesex at
Colwyn Bay to stay top of the AXA league. Middlesex were chasing
250 and eventually found themselves needing 35 off the last three
overs, but Stephen Barwick grabbed the final two wickets to end
on 5-30. Glamorgan skipper Hugh Morris had earlier hit a century
to set a new Sunday aggregate scoring record for the county of
4,719 runs. Morris put on 92 with Stephen James (31) and 60 for
the third wicket with Tony Cottey (35).
Kent skittled Yorkshire for just 75 to maintain their second
place in the Sunday League table. Even though they only made 161
themselves, Kent`s steady bowling and some poor Yorkshire batting
saw the visitors to victory. Opener Trevor Ward kept Kent afloat
with 63 off only 71 balls but once he was out the innings fell
aqay. Yorkshire could not cope with the low bounce and Kent`s
bowlers shared the wickets around as the home side beat their
lowest Sunday score by just one run.
Leicestershire kept their 100% home record in this season`s Sun-
day League with a tense ten-run defeat of Notts in a thrilling
contest. Injuries deprived both sides of bowlers and the batsmen
capitalized by hammering a total of 560 runs. Captain Nigel
Briers (54) set the basis for Leicester`s challenging score of
285-8. Paul Pollard (74) and Paul Johnson hit 81 runs off 11
overs as Notts hit back while Chris Cairns blasted 48 but their
final total of 275-7 was not quite enough.
Ian Salisbury bowled Sussex to a ten-run win over Surrey with his
best Sunday display of the season. Salisbury grabbed three wick-
ets in four balls to leave Surrey needing 14 from the final over,
a task which proved too much for them. Sussex had scored 222-7
thanks to an unbeaten 39 from Danny Law, an entertaining 35 from
Franklyn Stephenson and 48 extras. A stand of 89 between Graham
Thorpe (53) and Adam Hollioake (36) raised Surrey`s hopes but
Salisbury proved decisive as Surrey made 212.
Neil Fairbrother was stranded on an unbeaten 99 as Lancashire
completed their second one-day victory over Worcestershire in a
week. Fairbrother and John Crawley (54) shared a stand of 115 in
18 overs to make victory secure after Lancashire had slumped to
24-2. Both men were dropped off Richard Illingworth and were
also hit by Gavin Haynes but they kept calm. Earlier Graeme Hick
maintained his recent good form with an unbeaten 80 from 115
balls in Worcester`s total of 189-8.
Ronnie Irani smashed a quickfire half-century to set up Essex`s
105-run victory over Northants at Luton. The all-rounder hit 50
off just 26 balls, with 24 coming from the penultimate over to
boost Essex`s total to a reasonable 216-6. He gave valuable sup-
port to skipper Paul Prichard who made a classy 81 against some
tight bowling. Neil Mallender only conceded 19 runs. Irani then
starred with the ball, removing both Northants openers, and the
hosts never recovered, collapsing to 111 all out.
Robin Smith and Sean Morris shared a century stand but could not
save Hampshire from a tense four-run defeat by Gloucestershire.
Morris with a Sunday=best 87 and Smith (55) added 119 in 22 overs
before both fell to David Boden who ruined Hampshire`s chances.
Boden also removed Mark Nicholas for a duck to leave them just
short of victory on 219-5. Gloucestershire`s 223-7 was built
around Mark Alleyne`s hard-hitting 70 and a bold 46 from Monte
Lynch.
Daryll Cullinan`s unbeaten 76 was all in vain as Derbyshire lost
to Somerset by 19 runs at Derby. The hosts lost the match in the
middle of their innings when they managed only 68 runs from 20
overs and also lost four wickets. Kim Barnett (30) and England
squad member Dominic Cork (36) had given them a good start but
Harvey Trump bowled well as they only made 193-6. Mark Lathwell
had hit 55 for the visitors and Keith Parsons was not out on 52
as Somerset reached 212-7.
Four West Indians made their highest score of the tour against
Durham threadbare attack at Chester-le-Street. Brian Lara (91),
Sherwin Campbell (113), Courtney Browne (102no) and Richie
Richardson (101) were the quartet in question. However, the most
dazzling innings came from Lara, who made his 91 off 90 balls,
including 16 fours. The tourists amassed 462-5 from 95 overs
while Durham reached 31-0 in their second innings, reducing the
deficit to 67.
