ARTICLE: Indians Leave in Credit (G.Howat) - 14 Sep 1994

INDIANS LEAVE IN CREDIT - Gerald Howat

Hong Kong and Malaysia are the next stop-off tour points for
India`s Under-19 team, who leave today having won the Test series
1-0 against England thanks to their nine-wicket win in the first
game at Taunton. Although they lost both one-day internationals,
the Indians won six of their other eight matches. No outstanding
player emerged and, despite averaging 54.00 in all matches and
coming with a glowing reputation, Amol Muzumdar, with only 87
runs against England, never established himself in the three
Tests. Nevertheless, he and the stylish V. V. S. Laxman (45.25)
are potential players of the future. Most of the team could bat
and middle and late order runs were the norm as Pankaj Dharmani,
with his 178 at Edgbaston on Sunday, demonstrated. There were
five spin bowlers, led by Balaji Rao with 32 wickets at 21.53.
England`s Michael Vaughan ended his 12-match Test career at this
level with 776 runs (40.84) the second highest in Under-19 crick-
et. Marcus Trescothick, with a record aggregate of 467 for a
series, is eligible next year.
