Australia in New Zealand
      Australia had a  mixed  tour  of  New  Zealand,  after
thrashing  New  Zealand  in the first tests, the second test
was interrupted by rain after being  evenly  contested,  New
Zealand  practically  won  the  third  test on the first day
bowling Australia out for  139.  The  one-dayers  were  also
evenly  fought.   After  looking  like running away with the
series in the first two games, on  the  slower  pitches  New
Zealand  fought  back  to  win the next two. The fourth one-
dayer won after a fine innings  by  youngster  Jeff  Wilson.
The  fifth game went down to the wire for a thrilling win to
Australia. This gave Australia the  one-day  series  victory
3:2.  The test series was drawn 1:1 and New Zealand kept the
trans-tasman trophy being the holders.
      Australia  was  scheduled  to  play  two  first  class
matches  before  the  first  of  the tests. The second match
however was reduced to a one-day game after the  first  days
were  washed  out.  The first class match was played against
the NZ Board XI consisting of the test batting line up  with
unknown  bowlers,  New  Zealand  planning  to  hide its test
bowlers. Batting first the board  eleven  struggled  to  264
with only 163 from Martin Crowe giving respectability to the
scorecard. Crowe went after the bowlers  in  an  attempt  to
gain  early  dominance.  In response Australias batting card
resembled an hourglass with Langer (89) and Healy  (87)  top
scoring  and  Taylor  (45),  S  Waugh  (41) and Reiffel (49)
scoring well. The middle order  (3-6)  all  failed.   Martin
Crowe  was  unable  to save the Board XI as they were bowled
out for 150. Reiffel pick up two more wickets to go with his
five from the first innings to finish with 7 and Hughes took
4.  Jones  top  scored  with  38  nobody  else  passing  30.
Australia  the  runs  easily for the loss of one wicket with
Langer (38*) and Steve  Waugh  (31)  continuing  there  good
form.
      The second tour match was against the President's  XI.
Batting  first   Australia struggled to 8 for 222. Boon (75)
and Mark  Waugh  (56)  were  the  mainstays  of  Australia's
innings.  Chris  Pringle  was the pick of the bowlers with 3
for 23. The president's XI won by 3 wickets with  1.2  overs
to  spare.  Rutherford  (97)  and Young (57) teamed in a 141
runs partnership that saw them home. Mark Waugh  (3-18)  and
Damien  Martyn  (1-17)  bowled  economically  but for only 6
overs each for some reason, whilst  the  over  bowlers  were
expensive.
