Sri Lanka won the trophy in 1979, before gaining Test Status in 1981, and Zimbabwe won it in 1982, 1986 and 1990, before gaining Test Status in 1992.

There was no third-place playoff in 1979 and 1990. However, it was re-introduced in 1994, as this was the first time that the top three sides, rather than just the top one, would qualify for the subsequent World Cup.
